How We Stay on Beat and Ahead of the Curve
Victrola’s story is one of perseverance, courage, and ingenuity. And if it weren’t for this story, we wouldn’t have the unparalleled products and values we celebrate today.
It all started with a young visionary entrepreneur by the name of Emile Berliner. His aim was to reinvent the phonograph. Thomas Edison’s cylindrical phonographs were exciting inventions, but boasted poor quality and were impossible to mass produce.
In just a few years, Berliner would showcase the innovative spark that would light the fire behind every Victrola product that came after—he would make phonographs that were pressed flat.
With that, the industry exploded.
Berliner partnered with an industrious machine shop owner, Eldridge Johnson, and with their combined creative and technical forces they formed the Victor Talking Machine Company in 1901. They spent years tirelessly iterating on their product until they felt it was something truly extraordinary.
This commitment to excellence—as well as clever marketing and artistic partnerships—helped them beat out the legions of hungry competitors in the industry, establishing them as the most popular turntable manufacturer in the country.
Their last mission? Make the turntable a convenient, household item.
And thus, Victrola was born.
