Victrola's monthly series features artists, authors, DJs, producers, athletes, and other cultural icons discussing their five essential albums on wax and beyond—an exploration of individuals' personal soundtracks and the music that inspires them.
Eli & Fur
For the ninth installment of our Vinyl Five series, we catch up with the DJ and electronic music producer duo Eli & Fur.
Platonic soulmates intertwined by a shared sonic vision, Eli & Fur (Eliza Noble and Jennifer Skillman) are far more than just a DJ duo. Individually, their talents are akin to constellations - vivid, distinct and mesmerizing. Together, they are an unstoppable force unapologetically pushing the boundaries of electronic music through a deeply personal lens.
Since emerging on the scene in 2013, Eli & Fur have established themselves as one of the music industry's most in-demand acts with unprecedented fervor - But you would be remiss to call them an overnight sensation, and that's exactly how they prefer it.
Q&A
In a world of streaming and almost limitless titles available, why do you think people are going back to vinyl?
Everything is now so disposable, things move so fast and everything is so saturated. To be able to hold something in your hand that you own is now so rare. It makes a lot of sense that people are longing for something more physical and long lasting.
Tell us a story about each of the records you selected. Why do these albums mean something to you? Feel free to answer in as many words as you like, no limit.
The Five
Fur: Pink Floyd, Darkside of the Moon - this is one of our all-time favorites. I’ve listened to this on repeat many times and it always sounds different each time.
Fur: Fleetwood Mac - Rumors Live - I love the live element of this, capturing a moment in time, you can feel the energy, something like this is special to have on vinyl.
Eli: Lana del Rey - Born To Die - this is an iconic album. We are both huge Lana fans. This album is atmospheric and poetic and it's the music that made us fall in love with her sound.
Fur: Bryan Ferry - Boys and Girls - my Dad had this growing up and I love it! Bryan Ferry is so good live.
Eli: Sade - The Best of Sade. Just a classic here... a perfect one to pop on on a Sunday and kick back.
Q&A
If you had (or have) your dream vinyl listening room, what would/does it look like? What would/does it sound like?
Fur: In lockdown I ran electricity into the woods and lived in a Bell Tent. I furnished the whole thing with rugs and sofas and I would listen to vinyl... it was so magical. I would want to go back to that moment.
When you shop for records, do you make a plan or just ransack the stacks and hope for the best?
Usually, there isn’t really a set plan. I think a lot of it depends on your mood whilst looking. It’s a perfect way to discover music and just feels like more of an experience than finding music digitally.
What is the most important album in your current collection?
Floating Points - Sparkling Controversy
Check out Eli & Fur's New Album "Dreamscapes"Any genres of music that are a hard pass?
Fur: Opera - as much as I try to like it I just don’t think I ever will. My dad would play it very loudly when I was a child and I absolutely despised it.
Headphones or speakers
Speakers!
What was your first album (and how did you score it)?
Fur: Duran Duran - Decade.
My mum gave me this on CD. It was the first album I ever listened to. I still love it!
Eli: Celine Dion - The Colour Of My Love, which was my mum's. It’s the only music she let the kids listen to, it was the start of my emotional journey with music.
